When losing a dog, most people will say it is similar to losing a child. But there is something more to it. Truth be told, not many parents lose a child in their lifetime.
And even if they do, there will be the reaction of how it is not the way it is supposed to be. On the other hand, we assume that when we bring a dog into our life, we will lose them along the way.
There is something special about the way a dog works their way into a part of our hearts. A place where we would probably not allow any human to go. Not even our children. A dog helps us understand the love that no person would be able to teach us.
It is a love that stays with us for our whole lives. We never forget the lessons that our dog has taught us. The patience, the kindness, the courage, and the peace.
So it is sad when losing a dog and someone tells us that it’s “just a dog”.
They also say that we cannot compare it to losing a child. But when we look around us, there are so many people grieving the loss of their best friend, their companion, their family member. And it is unbearable for them.
A dog shows us how capable we are to go beyond our logical understanding of communication. We can talk to, hear and understand our children. They are able to share with us their feelings and thoughts.
But when it comes to a dog, we have to learn how to read their mood from their bodies and their eyes.
And we take these abilities to be able to show more empathy to others that we would never be able to do if we did not have a dog.
And they are capable of knowing how we feel without ever needing to tell them. When we are sad, they comfort us. When we are happy, they play with us.
Losing a family member is never easy. And dogs are just as much a part of our family as any person could be. So when losing a dog, we must grieve.
For a part of your heart will be empty that no one will ever be able to fill.
