Last year, when veterinarians at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine began treating Scout, a 7-year-old boy. They had no idea that their efforts would result in a $6 million television broadcast during Super Bowl LIV.
Scout’s human father is David MacNeil, the founder, and CEO of WeatherTech, a company that makes automobile accessories, home, and pet care products.
And Scout famously starred in the company’s 2019 Super Bowl ad.
Scout collapsed in July of last year. After an ultrasound, his family rushed him to the vet. They discovered a tumor on his heart and hemangiosarcoma – A severe cancer of the blood vessel walls.
Scout was transported to UW’s School of Veterinary Medicine the next day as an emergency walk-in patient. When a team of veterinarians and clinicians jumped into action right at once.
As a result, Scout not only lived but thrived. Despite being given a 1% chance of life at the start.
MacNeil said, “Scout’s illness was devastating to us.”
We wanted this year’s Super Bowl campaign to raise not only awareness but also financial support for the wonderful research. Also, innovative therapies taking place at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, where Scout is still a patient,” said the team.
This discovery will also help enhance cancer treatments for people, potentially saving millions of lives across the board.
Scout began chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat his heart tumor in July. He also got immunotherapy, which attempted to get his immune system to attack tumor cells that expressed specific proteins.
Scout and his family received positive news only a month later. His tumor had shrunk by 78 percent. By September, the tumor had shrunk to 90 percent of its former size.
Finally, Scout’s heart tumor has almost vanished.
Scout appeared with members of the school’s faculty and staff who have been a part of the 7-year-old golden retriever’s cancer treatment journey, when Super Bowl LIV airs on FOX on Sunday, Feb 2.
The money raised from the Super Bowl commercial went toward cancer research at the School of Veterinary Medicine. The purchase of specialized equipment helps clinicians and researchers find new cancer-fighting drugs and treatments.

Unfortunately, on 22 March 2020, Scout crossed the rainbow bridge where he does not have to fight cancer again. But he will be remembered as a hero. His spirit will go on to help many other dogs fight cancer.
