Playing is very important to a dog. The game of fetch is a favorite game for many dogs. The rules are simple, the owner throws the ball and their dog will fetch it. That’s just something dogs love to do.
Some dogs love swimming in the ocean to fetch their ball. Lucy is one of those dogs. She was having her usual playtime on the beach until her ball landed in the hands of an unusual stranger.
On this day, Lucy swam to retrieve her ball and then dropped it in the water waiting for her owner to pick it up and throw it for her again.
And Then A Mysterious Creature Stole Her Fun
Then, something extremely rare happened. An octopus appeared. Stretching out its long tentacles it then grabbed the tennis ball. To Lucy’s utter confusion, the ball was then submerged into the water. Her look of bewilderment is priceless. “That is not how the game works!”
Swimming back into the depths of the water, this octopus clearly decided that the ball now belonged to him. Obviously extremely attached to his new acquisition, the ball never came back afloat.
Contrary to how bizarre it may seem that an octopus would be interested in a tennis ball, scientists have actually observed them displaying playing behavior. Releasing objects into a circular current and catching them, it seems that playing is as important to an Octopus as it is for dogs.
Octopuses have typically been depicted by mythology as the sea monster, such as the “The Kraken” of Norway. However, they are actually extremely sophisticated creatures, being highly intelligent and behaviorally complex animals with superb eyesight.
Hiding in rocky outcrops, seeing an Octopus is not common. This octopus obviously could not resist the temptation of an interesting new toy to play with!
Generally playing ball means that the one throws the ball and the dog fetches it and brings it back. On this day, an octopus decided to change the rules to “finders keepers!”
Sorry Lucy, sometimes in life, an octopus steals all of your fun!
