After nearly two months, a dog named Bella was found after saving her family’s life by warning them of a terrible storm before it destroyed their Tennessee home.
On March 3, while Eric Johnson was asleep, Bella, the family’s 6-year-old petite Australian shepherd, jolted him awake.
Johnson noted Bella acting abnormally and had the feeling that “something wasn’t quite right.”
Johnson learned that a tornado was approaching for their community of Cookeville after turning on the television. As the storm approached their home, Johnson gathered his wife and children. They hid in a bathtub for about 45 minutes.
When the storm hit their house, ripping it apart and flinging Bella into the backyard, the father of three searched for Bella.
The tornado completely wrecked the family’s home.
“When the tornado hit our house, Bella was hiding beneath our bed,” Johnson told CNN. “She was tossed into our yard and then ran away. Knowing she had lived but been unable to locate her was difficult for us. She was the part of our family that had been lacking for a long time.”
The family was about to give up hope of ever finding her when another miracle occurred.
Bella was rescued Sunday in an alley 4 miles from home with the help of church friend Sarah Lang Romeyn, a dog tracker.
Thankfully, Bella is now safe and well at home with the Johnsons.
Johnson and his wife had strewn garments throughout their area, hoping that Bella would recognize the scent and return home. On the other hand, Romeyn set up cameras borrowed from a local animal rescue organization in regions where people claimed to have seen her.
As a result, Romeyn located Bella’s hiding place with the help of the footage. Johnson, his brother-in-law, and their pastor found and rescued Bella.
The devoted dog reunited with her family after 54 days on her own.
“Everything about the situation was fantastic. I am quite grateful that I was in a position to assist him.” Romeyn stated to CNN. “I am privileged to have the talents that I have — sadly, we don’t use it, but over the years, I’ve gotten pretty excellent at trapping dogs.”
Even though the storm left Johnson with a head injury and his wife with fractured ribs, as well as the loss of their home, Johnson says the family is just thankful to be back together.
