At Bethel, Connecticut, the family was awoken at 3:30 a.m. by their normally quiet dog, Jasper. They had no idea that the small dog was about to become a big hero, saving the lives of a family sleeping peacefully next door.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Jasper, a 4-year-old Dachshund who sleeps in the same bed as his humans, began barking and acting up.
“He was jumping on my husband’s head,” says Robin Houser to News4 New York.
After some minutes of trying to calm Jasper, Houser’s husband got out of bed to see what was bothering the little dog.
That’s when he noticed the porch of his next-door neighbor was on fire.
The family next door, which included two small children, was soundly sleeping in their beds, completely oblivious to the fire that had erupted on their porch.
“He was incredible. When his dog began to bark and wake up, they called 911 and saved our lives,” said Izabella Zanbeli, a neighbor.
The families waited outside for assistance, with Jasper barking until Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department firefighters arrived.
“As soon as everyone arrived, the cops, the firemen, and everyone else, Jasper calmed down. So he knew exactly what he was doing,” Zanbeli explained.
Despite the fact that the cause of the fire remains unknown. The family has installed and updated existing smoke alarms while remaining grateful to Jasper and his family.
The Housers are proud of their big hero, if not a little taken aback by his success.
Robin said of Jasper’s actions, “I was surprised that he did it, It’s just not his style. He’s so goofy.”
