A neglected and pregnant German shepherd lived with her owner in Buckeye, Arizona. However, her life was no different than a stray on the streets.
Hannah’s owner became ill and went to Oklahoma for treatment. He has since been there for almost a year and a half.
Although he depended on his friends and family to look after Hannah and her puppies from a previous litter, the dogs were mostly left to fend for themselves.
On November 12, 2020, the pregnant German Shepherd was shot at close range. The bullet could not escape her body and left her paralyzed, unable to move.
The shooter or his reason to shoot is unknown, but the damage had been done.
A passerby saw the pregnant German Shepherd’s deteriorating condition and called the sheriff’s department. Hannah was brought to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) in Phoenix, Arizona.
The animal care scheduled for Hannah to be euthanized in a few days when a miracle occurred.
When Trish Houlihan, the shelter’s director, heard about Hannah, she immediately came to her rescue. “She couldn’t walk and we did not yet know that she was pregnant. She was in her enclosure, not moving. So, where she had waste is where she laid.”
Along with a volunteer, Michelle Forster, Houlihan began taking care of Hannah. The pregnant German Shepherd walked with her harness, and her left leg didn’t work at all.
The shelter had almost lost all hope of Hannah recovering. But Forster and Houlihan did not give up.
Forster adds, “For the next two weeks, I made sure to get Hannah moving. We went slow. I was always there to help her walk and get up. We did morning sponge baths and also in the afternoon if she needed it. I also worked daily on her legs using different therapy—we did bicycle movements, heat, cold, and pressure points. Each day she was getting stronger.”
Hannah regained her health with each passing day, especially in her paralyzed leg. Sometime later, Hannah gave birth to six beautiful puppies. All her babies are healthy and doing perfectly fine.
