In the 1930s, a Retriever dog named Swansea Jack lived with his owner, William Thomas, on the Tawe River in Swansea, Wales.
The dog was fast, active, and loving to the limit, shown by its cautioning barks and cozying huddles.
Once, Jack saw a small child drowning in a river. He hurried in and pulled the boy along the shoreline.
That was a heroic act indeed, and it was hard to believe. Unfortunately, there was no one around to see it, and if circumstances had not been the same, the boy would have spent his whole life telling the story to people who would never believe him. But Jack was not finished.
After a few weeks, Jack rescued another swimmer, this time in the presence of witnesses. Then there was another, and the list went on and on.
Over the next ten years, Swansea Jack saved at least 27 people in critical condition.
His master and community around noticed that whenever he was on a stroll in the same vicinity; he never lost his focus and alertness.
Swansea even alerted the tourists from going too deep in the river and played the role of an effective watchman.
This was an unbelievable story of loyalty to not his master but his master’s race as well.
Jack was awarded a silver collar by the Swansea council, a silver cup from the Mayor of London, the Bravest Dog of the Year Award, and a photograph of himself for his lifelong efforts.
That’s a lot more accolades than many of the fictitious heroes we’ve seen in Hollywood movies.
Nevertheless, he is still popular today — perhaps he was the nickname of the Premier League football club Swansea FC, “Swansea Jacks”. Jack’s story is an inspiration for pet lovers and all those who wish to lead a life with a heroic touch.
