Chewing is as natural to a dog as breathing. It is nothing you can stop them from doing. There are ways to help prevent your puppy from destroying your belongings and entire house one day. Here are some tips to handle your puppy’s non-stop chewing.

It’s helpful to first try and understand chewing behavior.

What Does My Puppy’s Non-Stop Chewing Mean?

Have you ever felt bored, frustrated, stressed, or playful? It is easy for us to grab our phones and search for Youtube to keep entertained. To your puppy or dog, chewing provides relief from these feelings.

If your puppy has chewed something, don’t get mad. What’s done is done. They were feeling something and they did the best thing that they knew. So how can you keep your puppy’s chewing habit under control?

5 Lessons On How To Train Your Dog To Listen To You

1. Supervise Your Puppy

Your puppy is like a human baby. They will want to explore the environment to learn about it. A lot of the time it will be by tasting everything. Just like you would watch what your baby is putting into their mouth, your puppy also requires your supervision.

2. Accommodate For Your Puppy’s non-stop chewing

When you need to leave your puppy at home alone, provide them with a designated area. You can crate train your puppy, or use dog gates to do this. Crate training can be a great solution for your puppy, as dogs naturally love feeling safe in their hiding place.

The length of time your puppy can be crated can be estimated by the number of months of age of your puppy. When your puppy becomes an adult, they should not be crated for longer than nine hours.

Get chew toys that are safe for puppies to keep with them in their designated area.

Accommodating your puppy this way will prevent them from chewing on anything they find. You can also feel relaxed knowing your puppy won’t hurt themselves as they would only be chewing on what you gave them.

3. Soothe Your Puppy

Some puppies may have separation anxiety. Rubbing your hands on your puppy’s favorite toy will help to relax them as they will smell your scent. When you leave your puppy keep it unemotional so they do not sense your fear and become anxious.

They can become very disruptive if they are stressed. You can also try putting on very soft calming music to soothe a puppy who has separation anxiety.

4. Keep Belongings Out Of Your Puppy’s Reach

Anything your puppy can get to, pack it away. Some puppies are good at reaching objects you did not think they could so make sure everything is far from their reach.

Puppies will literally grab anything. Shoes, socks, underwear, children’s toys, plastic bags, trash, medicine, plants, cleaning products, toilet paper, cables, jewelry, books.

All of your things are hazardous to your puppy as they can choke on them or it can get lodged in their stomach.

5. Get Puppy Safe Toys

Choose toys that are designed specifically for puppies. A good choice would be firm, durable rubber toys. Hollow ones are great for stuffing treats inside to keep your puppy busy. Make sure the size is appropriate.

Do not give your puppy bones, cow hooves, antlers, pig ears, rawhides, or toys made of hard plastic or nylon as they can cause stomach problems.

Take away any old toys that start to fall apart so that little pieces do not get swallowed. If you are not sure, check your choice of toy with your veterinarian before giving it to your puppy.

6. Redirect Your Puppy’s Attention

When your puppy is chewing on something they should not be chewing, direct their attention on a toy they can chew on and praise them for chewing the correct object.

It is better to teach your puppy what you do want them to do instead of trying to stop them from doing something wrong.

7. Do not let your puppy chew on old shoes or socks

It seems okay for you to let your puppy chew an old shoe or sock. However, you are unknowingly teaching your puppy that it’s also okay to chew on your new expensive shoes. Do not expect your puppy to know the difference.

8. Exercise Your Puppy

Your puppy will need daily exercise no matter its breed or energy level. Some individuals will require more than others. When you provide them with their exercise needs, they will feel less bored and frustrated. They will then not feel the need to direct their extra energy into chewing.
