A creature that is skinny, balding, and hunching over on the side of the road for months is a scary scene. He had scaly skin and a shriveled and pointy tail. His black fur stood straight up and heavily tangled. Everyone started calling him a werewolf.
Having eaten not much but scraps for weeks, he was unable to walk properly. Besides limping around an orchard in California for a long time, not much was known about this creature.
People didn’t even know what creature he was. And they were too afraid to get close enough to find out.
A woman driving past stopped when she spotted him and made a Facebook post asking for help. She waited for help until someone arrived. Local dog rescuer, Megan Bower, came soon after seeing the post.
Founder of Bowe’s Adoptable Rescue, Megan was almost in tears after seeing this poor dog. He did not have much time left in this type of situation.
He was sad, and could hardly stand. Coming close to him, she could easily see past the werewolf and recognize a very sick German Shepherd.
Calling him King, she hurried him into her car and take him to an emergency vet. He wanted help and willingly went with her into the car.
The vet wrote a list of all the injuries and diseases the dog had. Most importantly, Kind had a broken pelvis and tail and also suffering from scabies. And King was only 1 year old, which he did not look.
The vet thinks he was involved in a hit and run, which would explain why his tail was broken as well.
And it must have happened a few months before as it was starting to heal incorrectly. King was unable to walk far because of his broken pelvis, so was very dehydrated and emaciated.
Megan took King to her shelter to help him regain his strength before surgery. But because mange is contagious, she quarantined him in her garage, away from the other animals in her care. Giving him small feedings at first to build up his weight and strength.
He was clearly grateful besides the pain and weakness. King loves cuddles and every time Megan sits beside him, he puts his head on her face and gives hugs. He is also calm and relaxed about the whole situation.
Finally being strong enough to go for surgery after about one and a half months of all-day care, feeding, and medicine. He was also recovering from scabies. Now he goes on daily walks to improve the strength of his leg and will go for a follow-up check-up after a month. When they will remove his stitches and check if he needs another hip surgery.
King is enjoying his new life as a dog and not the werewolf people believed him to be.
He loves getting treats, going for walks, and sticking his head out of the windows while going for a drive. Even though he is clearly doing much better, there is still a lot of improvement that needs to take place.
It is unbelievable how much better he is doing. It is also scary how many “scared” people just drove past this poor dog. And all it took was one person to change this “werewolf” to a loving and caring dog who is enjoying his new family members.
Thanks to the Dodo for bringing these stories to light and that one person can change the world.
