Sheridan Oliver Martin revealed to her husband her love for small dogs, preferably a Chihuahua. Her husband, Sinclair, did not endorse the idea, since he did not like small dogs.
Sinclair believed all small dogs were rude and a little too cranky.
Instead, he wanted a big dog like a German shepherd or a pit bull. Martin says, “He wanted a big, tough dog that would be able to play rough with Merlin, and he didn’t think a little dog would be able to.”
Growing up, Martin owned a Chihuahua and knew that small dogs should not be underestimated.
She adds. “I begged and pleaded, and eventually, he caved and said for my next birthday I could [get a Chihuahua]. I remember the whole week before and the entire car ride there. He lectured me about how she would be my responsibility and my dog. He wasn’t going to have anything to do with her.”
Well…
Finally, after much discussion, the couple adopted a puppy and named her Pickles. The moment Sinclair held the small dog, he was smitten by the Chihuahua.
All it took was a puppy dog face, her big brown eyes, and her wide smile.
The wife shares, “As soon as the car door closed, he turns to me, points at Pickles, and says, ‘Um, yeah, that’s OUR dog. And she’s just staring at him like, ‘Yeah, I am.’”
Shortly after, Sinclair started looking after Pickles, from giving her baths to putting sweaters on her. She became daddy’s favorite girl. “He tucks her in every single night beside his pillow,” Martin adds. “He did a complete 180.”
Their small dog is friendly and didn’t take much time to get familiar with Merlin, their big dog. Pickles is athletic and loves jumping, running, and wrestling with her siblings.
“Pickles gives Merlin hell on a daily basis,” Sinclair said. “She runs him ragged.”
