While his family was being rescued, DJ fell into the floodwaters in Australia, but his father never gave up hope.
DJ, a border collie who fell into raging floodwaters while his owner was being rescued last week, has been reunited with his family after surviving three days alone on Australia’s flooded coast.
According to ABC News, A helicopter rescued Mark O’Toole, his family, and a neighbor from the top of their house in New South Wales on Feb 28 as severe flooding threatened to consume the structure.
The Australian Defense Force was able to save the humans in a dramatic rescue. This was broadcast live on television, but DJ fell into the water.
“I tried to grab him but ripped a chunk of his hair out and he went under the house,” O’Toole told ABC.
They thought DJ was gone forever, but O’Toole refused to give up. Three days later, he found DJ again with the help of a social media campaign, a local volunteer, a boat, and a jet ski.
It took about six hours after a neighbor spotted DJ in the area. O’Toole was worried he’d never find DJ again.
Then, he looked to his right, he was up to his chest in water. DJ was laying atop a pile of metal that was most likely a shed, according to O’Toole.
The best moment, though, was when he returned DJ to his girls in Lismore.
“I sobbed when we got at the house and saw that everything had vanished especially my children’s belongings,” he told ABC News. “But then I thought, ‘Who cares?’ because our family reunited with our border collie. We couldn’t ask for a better situation.”
What’s better? On their rescue mission, O’Toole’s team rescued ten more canines and six cats.
