Winston, the black cocker spaniel wasn’t having a bad day; he was having three of them in a row, trapped underground in an abandoned badger habitat.
On February 26, Winston, a cocker spaniel was wandering around at the Diamond Jubilee Wood in Normanton Le Heath when he disappeared down a badger sett (burrow).
According to the BBC, the unfortunate dog became trapped and unable to get out, so his family, Heather and Alex Peake called the RSPCA for assistance.
Even though they had a good idea of where Winston was, rescuing him wasn’t easy. It is illegal to disturb Badger setts in the United Kingdom. So Winston had to stay for 48 hours before a rescue could begin.
Even back then, rescuers needed a permit from Natural England to dig Winston out.
Finally, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service began its rescue operation shortly before noon on Tuesday.

The investigation started with specialist listening equipment to determine if activity could be detected underground. After determining where Winston was in the sett, workers began digging, and Winston’s mud-caked head broke the surface after nearly five hours of work.
Heather Peake told BBC that the last several days had been grim. “We felt we’d already lost him when the firefighters started looking, and we mentally prepared ourselves for the worst. When we finally saw his little face peeping out of the mud, I burst into tears again.”
Winston went to the RSPCA for an examination, where he’d spent the last 60 hours before going home with his family.
The spaniel was “exhausted and in shock” but was relieved to be back at home and doing fine.
RSPCA inspector Sue Haywood told the BBC that “the fire service did a great job safely digging him out of the tunnel. It was really amazing when he was finally rescued—we were all overjoyed, and despite his ordeal, he was relatively unharmed.”
