By scaring away a thief who was attacking his 86-year-old owner, this dog saved her life.
On Monday, rescue dog Axel leaped in when owner Joyce Ackerley was hit on the head by a raider who tried to steal her jewelry while she “pottered” in her Greater Manchester garden.
The robber was seized on by the German shepherd Akita mix, who bit him and then chased him down the street.
Mrs. Ackerley described Axel as a “hero” who had “saved her life.” When she opened her yard gate to the man, the great-grandmother from Little Hulton, Salford, thought he was asking for directions.
According to her, he allegedly yelled, “give me your diamonds,” and assaulted the senior.
“The next thing I know, he’s hitting me over the head with a broom. They claim you can’t see stars, but I did that day. Axel then dashed through the garden,” she claimed.
MrsAckerley continued, “I’ve never seen axel move so fast and jump at this person and knock him flat on the floor.”
“He gets up, but my dog is still clinging to his arm. I feared I’d lost him when he shook the dog off. But, instead, the dog returned, his nose smeared with blood.”
Mrs. Ackerley adopted Axel as a rescue dog four years ago.
“We nicknamed him the gentle giant because he is gentle. I’ve been indulging him ever since he saved me – he’s my hero,” she continued.
“The incident might have been considerably worse if her dog hadn’t jumped in and scared the attacker away,” said Det Con Steven Hughes of Greater Manchester Police.
No one has been detained due to the incident, and police are urging any witnesses to come forward.
