Lilly, a Massachusetts pit bull, took on a freight train to save her owner, who had passed out on the tracks on a late-night walk in Shirley.
When the 8-year old dog saw the train, she began dragging its owner Christine Spain, 54, away by using her teeth. While Spain was unscathed, Lilly was left with a broken leg.
According to the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, the train’s driver observed the woman and her dog on the tracks shortly after midnight on May 3. He claimed that he attempted to stop the train in time but was afraid to hit them both.
When he got out, he discovered that Spain had been unhurt. But that the train’s wheels had severed Lilly’s front right leg, causing her to bleed profusely.
An animal control officer took Lilly to a neighboring emergency animal hospital where Spain’s son, Boston Police Officer David Lanteigne, met them in the parking lot.
As he got out of his car, Lanteigne had a sense of fear. But Lilly assured him that she was OK.
“The first thing I notice are those enormous, lovely eyes staring at me, and next to her, I notice her right front paw is wounded,” he told ABC News. “Right there, I saw her tail wag for the first time.”
Lanteigne rescued Lilly three years ago, who thought she’d make an excellent therapy dog for his mother, Spain.
She, unfortunately, struggled with alcoholism, depression, and anxiety for years.
He claimed that Spain adored Lilly. She would frequently defrost packs of green beans to split them up and put them in her diet. Spain’s drinking eventually dropped, he claimed.
He explained, “We saved Lilly, and Lilly saved my mother’s life.”
Last weekend, Lilly had two surgeries at the Angell Animal Medical Center. They placed steel plates to fix her damaged pelvis and support her left leg. Unfortunately, she injured her right front leg, and she now has a long scar.
According to Angell spokesperson Rob Halpin, Lilly’s veterinarians expect her to walk again.
But adjusting to three legs after the train accident will be difficult for the senior canine.
