How To Win A Stray Dog’s Trust

Humans are typically a source of fear for stray dogs. If you want to help someone, you must first earn their trust. This could be a quick and straightforward process or a hard and time-consuming one depending on the dog.

Patience, vigilance, and care are the keys. Learn the best ways to approach, gain trust, and deal with stray animals while remaining cautious to protect yourself.

Regular feeding and a calm, courteous approach will go a long way in winning over a stray dog. Here are some tips to win a stray dog’s trust:

1. Recognize Body Language

Understanding canine body language is maybe the most critical aspect in earning or losing a stray dog’s trust. Misreading a dog’s signals can cause them to run or result in a bite.

For a successful rescue, knowing when the dog is stressed, when the dog is growing more comfortable, and when you can approach is crucial. Timing is vital when dealing with a stray dog.

2. Maintain Your Composure While Remaining Careful.

Remember that stray dogs can be wild, and they haven’t always had a positive encounter with humans. Firstly, examine the dog’s behavior.

Do not approach if they appear aggressive. If they’re terrified or anxious, you can calm them down, but back off if that doesn’t work. Don’t put pressure on them. You can always try again when they appear to be in a better mood.

3. Avoid Making Direct Eye Contact And Move Gently.

Avoid making direct eye contact with the stray as you approach. Because dogs will perceive this as a sign of hostility and will mark you as a threat.

Instead, when you approach, gaze to the side of their face. You don’t want to startle the dog, so move carefully.

4. Hold Out Your Hand

If the dog doesn’t seem bothered by your approach, come to a halt a few feet away and extend your hand.

Don’t get too near; you don’t want to crush their personal space and overwhelm them.

Make sure your palm is facing down when you extend your hand. That’s all. Wait for the dog to come over and sniff your hand. And If they do, it suggests they’re interested in communicating with you.

You must provide them with the option of interacting or simply walking away.
