For Chucky, a 13-year-old Pomeranian, April 8 began like any other day in the garden of his home in Boksburg City, South Africa, with Melissa and Byron Thanarayen. Little did he think he would need Jessie to be his hero.
Thanarayen told Daily Paws that while they’re gone, the couple typically leaves outside access for Chucky and his two siblings – Jessie, a 7-year-old black Staffordshire, and Ponco, a 10-year-old Pom.
But something strange happened on this particular day.
“My wife and I were on our way to a meeting. We noticed Chucky’s head was wet when we returned. We looked throughout the home for a place where he could have gotten wet, but we couldn’t find anything.” Byron said.
They’ve lived in the house with the pool for nearly five years. But the dogs are used to swimming with the couple and never by themselves. So they felt it was strange that the dog go into the pool on his own. So despite Melissa’s insistence that Chucky must have been in the pool, the couple double-checked their CCTV Footage to make sure.
The Thanarayens were stunned by the video from their CCTV. The footage showed poor little Chucky slipping off the edge of the pool and falling straight into the water.
The little dog instantly panics and fights to stay afloat, paddling madly and unable to return to the pool stairs.
It’s difficult to watch as the Pomeranian attempts, again and again, to get out of the pool, but he can’t get a grip on the sides. Finally, help arrives in the form of big sister Jessie after several minutes, presumably brought to the pool by the noise of Chucky’s splashing.
Jessie reaches down to take Chucky in her jaws every time he swam up to the pool’s edge, trying to save him.
Unfortunately, the little dog escapes her grasp multiple times. Jessie even appears to untie a coiled pool hose at one point. To build a makeshift life preserver to save her brother. What a wise dog!
Throughout the heart-pounding footage, Jessie never gives up trying to save the smaller dog from the water.
The video captures the entire rescue attempt from beginning to end. This brave young lady works heroically hard to bring her tiny pal to safety as Chucky treads water and searches for a way out.
Thanarayen said, “It was tough to see Chucky in the pool especially though he was right next to us [later on]. Knowing that he swam for so long astounded and broke our hearts. Thankfully, despite their ordeal, the Thanarayens report that both dogs are recovering well. Whew!
The viral video has captivated animal lovers worldwide, who are awestruck by Jessie’s extraordinary bravery.
The Thanarayens acquired Jessie from the Boksburg SPCA, which gave her an Animal Hero Award. In addition, the family received a donation of a pool cover installation. It gave them peace of mind that their pups will be protected from similar accidents in the future.
