Maggie, a Pit Bull/Belgian Malinois mix shelter dog, was homeless for the first few years of her life.
Maggie was found as a stray on the streets and placed for adoption with a family who put her in a boarding facility and never returned to pick her up.
She was adopted by another family, who later returned her to the shelter.
Maggie’s future seemed dismal at three years old, after two failed adoptions.
That is until the Southern Tier K-9 Association learned of the high-energy dog being relocated from shelter to shelter and decided she had the potential to be a hero.
Andrew Pike, an Owego police officer, and K-9 handler said:
“They evaluated shelter dog and determined that she possessed the necessary qualities to serve as a police K-9. So they took her, trained her for a few months, and then handed her over to me.”
Maggie is an excellent prospect for a specialist police job because of her tremendous drive, and unlimited energy. The Southern Tier K-9 Association trained her in narcotics detection and tracking.
Officer Pike, her handler, is working with her every day to deepen their link and get her ready for the job. Even though she is still in training and not yet prepared to put on her Police Dog harness.
“It’s fantastic, and I believe the bond has already formed. She’ll be laying down, and I’ll make a small movement, and she’ll say, ‘Alright, are we going to do something?’ Let’s start.’ She’s very affectionate and loving. Pike told WENY,
“The bond is already there, and it happened quickly.”
Above all, Maggie has found a forever home and a loving family in Officer Pike. Pike describes the 3-year-old future hero as his best friend and work partner.
Maggie is also on her way to becoming a superstar in her own right, with her own Facebook and Instagram sites for followers to follow her transformation from homeless to hero.
