Despite the loss of her own puppies, a bereaved rescue dog Georgia adopted three orphaned kittens and raised them as her own.
Hope for a better life for the rescue dog quickly turned to desperation when Sunshine Dog Rescue of Phoenix, Arizona, saved a pregnant Australian Shepherd mix from a gas station near the US/Mexico border.
The rescuers gave the expected mother the name Georgia, who promised to look after her and her puppies. On the other hand, Georgia went into labor too soon and lost all of her babies.
She was devastated after losing her babies, according to Anita Osa, who’s the founder of Sunshine Dog Rescue.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a mother dog lose an entire litter. She was distressed. Georgia was looking for her babies, and it was so sad. She ripped up the toddler mattress she was sleeping on, looking for her babies,” she told ABC15.
Rescuers gave Georgia a stuffed puppy with a heartbeat, which seemed to help her relax. However, the bereaved mother was still in pain.
As a result, Osa issued a request for any animals in need of a lactating mother dog. That’s when a trio of newly orphaned kittens appeared, in desperate need of assistance. Osa introduced only one kitten at a time, unsure if Georgia would like them (or if the kittens would like her).
“I bought one and gave it to her to sniff, and she seemed to like it, so I brought out the others. It’s incredible to see how quickly she calmed down,” she said.
Georgia’s kittens don’t appear to recognize she’s a dog, according to Osa.
Mom and her adopted babies have bonded beautifully after a few days of learning their new roles with the help of rescuers. Georgia is an excellent mother, letting the kittens to nurse, bathing them, and cuddling with them while they nap.
Osa said: “It’s amazing to see how she looks after those kittens like they’re her own children.”
