Blue Bear, the Grand Mastiff, had only known one home all his life – his dad. However, it all changed recently.
Blue Bear’s hooman had no place to live, so he brought the Grand Mastiff to Trenton Animals Rock.
The senior dog did not understand why his dad brought him to the shelter or why he had tears in his eyes. Blue Bear barked and cried, grabbing everyone’s attention at the shelter.
Danielle Gletow, the shelter director, said, “I went over to him, and he immediately leaned his head into my waist and let me pet him. It was just heartbreaking.”
The Grand Mastiff was not aggressive at all. In fact, he was sad and confused. The director promised his dad to take good care of Bear.
She also assured him that Bear wouldn’t have to spend the night in the shelter, and she would try finding him a foster home soon.
Sadly, the grand mastiff missed his hooman so much, he began crying real tears
Gletow added, “We tried to put Blue Bear in a kennel just while we collected ourselves and tried to make some calls, and he was just super sad. So we brought him into the office, and he laid his head in my lap.”
“Every chance he got, he’d go over to the door and sit in front of it crying. He turned around, and he had literal tears coming down his face. I’m not exaggerating — literal tears.”
As promised, Gletow spent the night with the Grand Mastiff until he found a foster home. But poor Bear had severe arthritis in his back legs, and placing her was not going to be easy.
So, Gletow made a live Facebook video of the Grand Mastiff and began getting calls, and messages from all over the country.
A kind local foster, Madison, saw the video and was willing to foster Bear.
Finally, at her home, the dog began to relax and decompress.
“We put a pillow on the floor, and he laid his head down on the pillow, and Madison and I just sat with him and snuggled him and spent some time. He’s really sweet. He’s like a gentle giant.” Gletow shared.
“We’re going to keep him in foster care for a while to let him decompress,” Gletow said. “Once the vet has a chance to see him and we know what his needs are, we’ll start looking for a home with someone familiar with large-breed dogs, and we’ll get him on supplements and possibly acupuncture.”
Thank you The Dodo for the story.
