Molly McManimie of Las Vegas wanted to share the story of her Grandmother. A lady who only had the desire to get a dog. But having Alzheimer’s made her husband very hesitant to agree. She begged him for years.
Growing up, we don’t understand the effects of old age. Our parents and grandparents are superheroes to us. But as we get older, we realize the impacts of old age. And the diseases that intensify the aging process.
The love remains the same, even when the roles change. The following is what Molly McManimie of Las Vegas would like to share about her grandmother.
She was one of three children, and both of her older brothers eventually developed Alzheimer’s and died. Sadly, the family’s worst fear ended up coming true when Grandma Betty succumbed to the same disease.
Betty began to exhibit symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. And over time, it has severely affected her abilities, making some things impossible for her to do.
Watching their spirited and always on the move grandma decline has been difficult for her children and grandchildren. The grandmother’s love of cooking could no longer continue as she forgot key ingredients.
All these little things that we grew up with become harder to accept. But the children understood how important it is for them to continue showing their love.
Despite her advancing Alzheimer’s, Grandma Betty always wanted a dog. Despite her declining health, the kids said that she remembered every day that she wanted a dog.
In addition, she recalls quite well that her husband always said no to her because of her Alzheimer’s.
As their household had always had dogs, her family refused to give up. They are dog lovers, so Molly’s family knows what a dog can do to help improve your health. Then they finally got the approval. They began searching for the most ideal rescue dog.
In addition to keeping Betty company, the dog’s presence in the house would also help the grandfather with being her full-time caretaker. Our day-to-day routines are filled with joy when we are with our dogs.
Finally, the family came across Fenton after searching rescue sites. Molly and her sisters owned a dog like this one growing up, who was energetic and agile.
They made the decision to adopt him once they realized he would be the perfect fit for the family. Since their grandma never imagined that her husband would say yes, they decided to keep it a secret and give her a wonderful surprise.
Fenton’s surprise arrival was all the more magical and amazing than you could imagine.
Her family could literally see that in these moments she had no disease, all her symptoms, stress, and pain had simply disappeared. Seeing Grandma Betty get her wish of having a dog finally came true was like a million lifetimes of joy all at once for the family.
It is yet another example of how dog relationships can have a profound impact on lives. They are little balls of love who never leave us, always following us around, just waiting for us to reach out to them when we do.
The fact that Fenton is with her regardless of where she goes and that her disease is a little less frightening because of him, then they have both rescued each other.
In response to Molly’s question about whether Betty could recall Fenton’s name, her dad had the perfect response. “No”, he said, “but she remembers how much she loves him. That’s all that matters.”
Thanks to Love What Matters and the McManimie family for bringing a dog to this grandma’s life. Also for the pictures and video.
