After adopting a rescue Greyhound, a Coventry couple found he was the grandchild of their previous dog, who had died just weeks before
After the death of Doreen and Stewart Hawthorne’s 13-year-old Greyhound Mavis earlier this year, they decided they wanted to adopt another ex-racing Greyhound.
They had adopted Mavis from Dogs Trust Kenilworth in 2016, and they returned to the rehoming center in Kenilworth.
Doreen quickly recognized Rici, a five-year-old girl who resembled Mavis.
Doreen describes it as gazing at Mavis. “We decided to research into his origins a few days after he came home with us and discovered the familial connection.
It was fantastic! Especially considering Mavis was on the verge of being put to sleep before arriving at Dogs Trust Kenilworth.”
“We discovered when we got Mavis that she had had multiple litters of puppies. Also that once her racing days were done, she had been taken to a vet to be put to sleep.
Fortunately, the vet requested that Dogs Trust Kenilworth take her in, and we could adopt her. So several years later, we’re with her grandson. It’s fantastic.”
Using Rici’s racing tattoo and paperwork, Doreen was able to trace his family background. Although Rici and Mavis are nearly identical in appearance, their personalities are vastly different.
“Mavis has been extremely peaceful since she got home, but Rici has been a little nervous,” Doreen explains. “We don’t believe he’s ever lived in a home, so everything was new to him.”
“However, now that he’s settling in and his personality is beginning to peek through. He loves to romp around the garden with his favorite squeaky toys and enjoys his walks. We miss Mavis, but we are delighted to have a second member of her family with us.”
