When Roxy continued jumping off and on the bed, they sensed something wasn’t right. After alerting her family to a carbon monoxide leak in the night, a Mild-Mannered Dog Roxy has been acclaimed a hero.
On Monday, Brad Harbert of Ankeny, Iowa, told CBS affiliate WHO that his family’s “mild-mannered” Dog Roxy became abnormally active in the middle of the night.
He further added, “She doesn’t bark very much. But, if you ask her to speak, she will wail. I told the outlet. Something was wrong with Roxy, I could tell. She had just jumped off my bed and jumped back upon it.” Harbert went on to say. “I heard an alarm when I started to wake up, and it wasn’t the smoke alarm.”
Harbert immediately realized the beeping was the home’s carbon monoxide alarm.
He said, “I jumped out of bed. Roxy came out to the hallway right when I did.” The dog also scratched Harbet’s son Jackson’s door to alert him.
“I took out the [carbon monoxide] detector and discovered that it’s triggered if it chirps four times,” Harbert added. “In the house, there is also active carbon monoxide.”
Harbert, his son, his father, and Roxy all escaped the house unscathed. The Ankeny Fire Department responded quickly after Harbert dialed 911.
Moreover, the energy provider confirmed that the home’s electric/gas fireplace caused the carbon monoxide leak.
Harbert had this to say about the life-saving puppy: “She holds a special place in our hearts… But, unfortunately, something was awry that night –— she woke me up, and simply by her actions, I could tell she was shaking and worried we wouldn’t be able to get outdoors.”
He further added, “I’m delighted to have her.”
