Olivia, a discarded puppy, was born with front paws but no legs to support them. Her previous owner, a teacup breeder, discarded the poor pup since she was of no use to him.
One day he dropped by Fayette County Animal Control in West Virginia and asked the staff to euthanize her.
The staff at the shelter refused to do so and instead took the discarded puppy in their care. They knew Olivia deserved another chance at life.
While walking is difficult for Olivia, she is joyful and brings smiles to everyone’s faces in the shelter.
The volunteers are dedicated to making the pup’s life easier, and soon she’ll be receiving her own wheelchair with the help of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.
The discarded puppy is less than a year old and only weighed a half pound when she was brought to the shelter.
Since then, she has been through numerous orthopedic check-ups and x-rays to determine if she can make a full recovery.
The custom wheelchair for her ease will soon be arriving. Meanwhile, the discarded puppy is living her best life in the shelter with her new best friend, Rey, a huge Lab.
Olivia’s foster parent shared, “They are real buds. Olivia is full of energy, and Rey is perpetually sleeping and laid back. Olivia jumps all over her. Rey looks out for her.”
The founder of Homeward Tails, Sue Bells, also shared, “The breeding of these little teacup animals really does have real-life, negative impacts. And although the overbreeding of any animal at any size has an impact, we just hope that, as people are going out there and securing pets for their family, that they will be very mindful of where those pets are coming from,”
Bell said. “If from a breeder, that they’re visiting the breeder and they’re going to the sites, and they see how the animals are kept. They’re interviewing the breeders thoroughly to ensure that they are reputable.”
