When Akela, the Boxer Mastiff, began drowning in muddy water, a young officer risked his life to rescue the dog. Unlike other dogs who love swimming, Akela struggled to stay above water.
A local man saw Akela struggling and immediately called for help. He told the officers that Akela tried avoiding being hit by a car but ended up falling in the pond.
The poor dog tried swimming to the shore but could not. That’s when a young officer from the Washington Township Police Department rushed to rescue the dog.
When the young officer arrived at the scene, he saw Akela fighting for her life. The poor soul was tangled in the bushes beneath her. Occasionally she would bring her head up but then disappear in the muck again,
“The poor thing must have been treading water for a while and not going anywhere,” said police Lt. John Kaufmann.
Thanks to the officer’s quick thinking, he borrowed a kayak from a nearby local and got to work. The young officer paddled to Akela to save her from drowning.
Two more officers helped with the rescue from the shore. They threw a ball tied to a long leash into the pond. They helped him back to the shore as he guided Akela to safety.
The police department shared on their Facebook page, “Akela was in high spirits after her ordeal and even posed for a few quick pictures before being turned over to Animal Control Solutions.”
