DeKalb County Animal Services volunteers discovered an abandoned and scared dog lying in an empty cardboard box outside the shelter one day.
The poor dog was scared to come out of the cardboard box his owners had left him in.
Even after encouragement from the staff at LifeLine Animal Project, the scared dog would not leave his box. His friends at the shelter named him Plum.
“He was just so sad, and we just wanted to hug him and make him feel better and let him know he was safe,” said a staff member.
Plum began interacting from within the box and even accepted some pets, but the dog would not leave his safe space at any cost. The staff dealt with the situation with complete patience and kindness and gave the dog all the time he needed.
“We set up a nice crate with a fluffy bed and some treats and left the door open hoping he would go in it on his own.”
After a few weeks, the scared dog finally left the cardboard and began interacting with the employees at the shelter. He was soon exploring the area and making new friends.
Karen from the LifeLine Animal Project said, “It was just one of those moments where your heart just goes, ‘Aww, he’s gonna be okay.’”
Since his rescue, the scared dog has gained 20 pounds and found a new family. His new parents adore him, and he even has siblings to play with all day.
His new adopters shared, “He’s the sweetest dog we’ve ever had. He can fall asleep in the most uncomfortable positions… he’s really a connoisseur of sleep.”
Thank you I Heart Dogs for the story. Thank you DeKalb County Animal Services for the video!
