Brianna Decker is the alternate captain of the United States Women’s Hockey Team. Brianna Decker’s dog Missy, helped her “get through” the pandemic and the changes it brought to her sport.
She praises her canine companion for assisting her in coping with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Last year, Decker, 30 told PEOPLE that she found consolation in her puppy, Missy, as her competition schedule was disrupted.
Decker, who will compete in the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, says the pandemic had a few “highlights,” including the buying of her first home in Wisconsin and the adoption of Missy.
She added, “I had a couple of highlights that I probably wouldn’t have done. But she was quite helpful in getting me through it.”
According to Decker, Missy, who was adopted in May 2020, was so helpful during the pandemic’s first summer.
“I got her because I wasn’t living at home. I bought her in May, and we had her for the entire summer, so she was fantastic to have around.”

Brianna Decker’s dog, Missy was a pleasant distraction for her.
She added, “I used to take her for walks. She padded the mental side of things a little bit more. And I was like, “Okay, I’ve got my training to complete,” but then I spent the rest of the day with the dog.”
Decker initially introduced Missy in an Instagram post in May 2020, stating at the time, “I’m certain I’ve discovered my new best buddy! I think we’ll form a great team!”

Because COVID-19 has “changed people’s lives,” the hockey pro admits that “the pandemic may be seen as a negative thing,” but she tells PEOPLE that she’s “tried to make the best of it.”
“Sometimes it’s quite difficult,” she admits, “but in other ways, it’s made my life a little bit simpler, and sometimes simple is nice.”
