5 Reasons Why Dogs Need To Play
Dogs love to play, but we rarely consider how valuable it is to their overall well-being. Dogs benefit from play on a cognitive, physical, and social level – and it helps relieve stress.
Here are 5 reasons dogs need playtime.
1) Play Promotes Physical Fitness
There’s no doubt that a good dog is a tired dog. Unless dogs get enough exercise each day, destructive habits can develop (such as excessive chewing) to pass the time. When it’s hard to give your dog enough exercise every day, you can incorporate some playtime at home into the routine.
Getting your dog some extra physical exercise each day can be easy if you let him play. Dogs can have a great workout by playing games such as tug of war, fetch, and frisbee.

2) Play Strengthens Your Bond With Your Dog
You can strengthen your bond with your dog by spending time with him – and playing with him is a great way to do that. Unlike most mammals, humans, and dogs can play well into adulthood.
It’s hard not to form a deep bond with your dog when you can share fun and play together. Playfulness is part of what makes our relationships with our dogs so special. In dogs, playfulness is thought to be a trait that was selected during domestication and one of the biggest factors contributing to our emotional bonds with them.
Therefore, to strengthen the bond you have with your dog, playtime with him is an easy (and fun) way to do it.

3) Play Stimulates The Mind
Another reason why dogs need play is that it allows them to exercise their minds. Brain games are a fun way for us to give our dogs something meaningful to do to enrich their lives.
Our dogs’ boredom can be alleviated by these activities, which reduces their likelihood of developing behavioral issues including excessive barking or chewing. Toys such as nose work games, puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and stuffed Kongs are some of my favorite brain games for dogs.
Keeping dogs active, focused, and entertained is easy with these easy-to-play games.
4) Play Is The Best Way To Train (And Improve Manners)
It’s fun to play with dogs, but it’s also an excellent way to practice basic training and improve manners. Puppies learn basic manners through play when they are young. A rough play may result in a nip from a littermate or mother, or they may stop playing altogether.
So how can we keep our dogs trained by using play?
Through interactive games.
For instance, the tug of war is a fun activity by itself, but it also teaches your dog self-control. That is, how to use their mouth gently. During play, our dogs observe us constantly, so they are learning our social cues.
5) Play Is A Boredom Buster
The main benefit of dog play is that it relieves boredom and keeps them busy. When dogs get bored, they will come up with their own ways to entertain themselves, and excessive barking is one of those undesirable behaviors.
Your dog will be less likely to develop destructive habits if you play with him several times a day. By adding some more playtime to your dog’s routine, you are giving him something meaningful to do.
Instead of leaving him to look for ways to entertain himself that might involve chewing up your shoes. But if your dog just loves shoes, these Chew Shoes from Amazon will give your pooch the shoes to chew away:
