Thankfully, Hannibal’s mother never gave up searching for him.
So when Mariah Cummings’ 3-year-old pit bull, Hannibal, was kidnapped during a home burglary in 2018, she didn’t know if she’d see him again. But, after a cross-country road trip, the two were miraculously reunited after two and a half years.
The tear-filled reunion was captured on Cummings’ TikTok and has received over 4 million views.

Cummings adopted Hannibal as a puppy in 2014. They were inseparable from the moment they met.
That is to say that Cumming’s fear of outliving Hannibal and having to live on without him would keep her awake at night.
Cummings’ fear of being alone without Hannibal came true in July 2018.
She arrived into her driveway in Saginaw, Mich., after returning from a trip and discovered the back door to her house was completely shattered and left open. She noticed that someone had broken in when she entered the house— Hannibal was gone.
Cummings stated, “The first thing I said was, ‘I don’t hear Hannibal.'”
Cummings claims that the robbers stole or destroyed nearly everything in her home. There were shattered cabinets, as well as missing TVs and bedding.
Hannibal’s food, bowls, and leashes were all missing, so she knew he hadn’t just run away. He was kidnapped.

Cummings began searching for her stolen pit bull Hannibal right away.
From posting flyers, sharing on social media, appearing on local television, to visiting local animal shelters each week. She visited practically all of Michigan’s animal shelters.
Even after she moved to Tennessee, Cummings occasionally got a message from someone claiming to have located her stolen pit bull, Hannibal. However, It was never him.
That is, until December 2020, when a friend gave Cummings a photo of a dog being fostered in the same town where Hannibal was taken.
Cummings added, “When I saw the picture, I instantly recognized him.”
Cummings was initially concerned that stolen pit bull Hannibal would forget about her.
On the other hand, the puppy ran straight into her arms the moment he saw her at the shelter.
She further added, “Tears were streaming down my cheeks. It wasn’t like I was crying; it was more like my body was crying for me.”
Hannibal returned home with a few fresh scars. They discovered a mast cell tumor in his shoulder after visiting the vet. Thankfully, doctors removed it through surgery.

Despite all, Hannibal’s charming attitude hasn’t changed. On the contrary, he’s even more clingy than before, following Cummings and her son around the house and snuggling in their beds whenever he can.
Cummings stated, “We are relishing each and every moment we have with him. And we’re grateful to have him.”
