Dog owners are frequently told that a dog can die in a hot car in only a few minutes.
Ashakih, a woman from Sandusky, Ohio, has been charged with animal cruelty after she disregarded the warning.
Her dog was in excruciating pain and fright before succumbing to the heat while locked inside her car. According to a Sandusky Police report, officers were summoned to the house of Mouheb Ashakih, 58, around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday.
According to Ashakih’s neighbor, he was peering from his window when he saw her pit bull, Chapo, into the backseat of the automobile parked in her backyard.
The neighbor added, “The dog was tearing up the interior of the truck, barking, and scratching at the windows to get out.”
“I don’t care, I want him to die!” said Ashakih when his neighbor approached her. That’s when he called the Sandusky Police Department.
To authorities, Ashakih acknowledged putting Chapo in the hot car as a punishment for attacking one of her other dogs.
There were four canines, a female and three 6-month-old puppies, still inside the house. Police didn’t see a dog or hear any barking or noise coming from the parked car throughout their interview with Ashakih, so they assumed she’d brought him back inside.
It had been around 30 minutes since the dog had been in the hot car.
Officers leaped over a fence and went to the car after learning that the dog was still inside. That’s when they came across Chapo, who was dead on the rear passenger floorboard. An officer used his baton to bust a window to unlock the automobile.
Officer added, “I shook the dog gently and noted that he was stiff and warm to the touch. When we smashed the windows and opened the door, a blast of scorching air was discharged from the interior of the vehicle. It was far hotter than the temperature outside.”
Officers also noticed the interior of the hot car had been wrecked and was coated in blood. It indicated that the dog had struggled to escape.
Officers took Ashakih into custody. The Dog Warden took charge of the four surviving dogs and removed them from the house.
