Pooping is something every dog does, but some are incredibly picky about their pooping spot. They’ll spend a long time sniffing around before deciding where to poop. The good news is, your dog is not the only fusspot.
They actually have a good reason for taking their time deciding where to poop, and here is why.
1. Your Dog Is WhatsApping
The ground is like their social platform. Poop and Pee are their messages to each other. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell. They sniff to gather information about their surroundings.
Reading messages from other dogs tells them everything they need to know. Who is in the area? When last they were there? Whether they are a friend or an enemy. Their sexual Status. What they ate for dinner. No wonder they sniff for so long!
Deciding where to poop is sometimes determined by a trigger in the scent of other dogs’ excretions. That is the reason why they poop next to other dog poops. It becomes a social hotspot.
2. Anxiety
Sometimes nerves can be the reason why your dog is hesitant to poop. This can develop from something else that caused them to be nervous dogs. Like people, going to the loo in a public area can be difficult for your dog.
They may feel secure pooping in a private area. If you think this is the case with your dog, try walking them through quiet areas or times of the day.
3. Surface Preference
Deciding where to poop can also be looking for a preferred surface. Puppies can learn to prefer the surface they were trained to poop on. For example, they could be looking for grass soft enough to qualify as a pooping spot.
I know a dog that refuses to go to the loo on wet grass. We cannot blame them for being fussy.
4. The Earth’s Magnetic Fields
That’s right, your dog may decide where to poop according to the magnetic poles. Apparently, dogs prefer to position themselves so that their bodies are aligned along the North-South axis.
This is why dogs turn around in a circle before eliminating. It’s incredible how connected dogs are to the earth.
Intricacy Of Dog Poop
The act of pooping is not just about eliminating. From information gathering to magnetic fields, It is a complex behavior that we do not have a full understanding of.
Next time you are waiting for your dog to do their business, remember that there is a deeper meaning to the process. Dog poop is quite amazing!
