Five years into his life, and Herschel did not know anything else except being locked up in a backyard all alone. Attempting to chew himself free, his teeth began to wear down. And even after his rescue, he still was returned after being adopted twice.
If no one wants a dog and keeps returning them to the shelter, the shelter usually puts them down. Because there must be so much trauma that the dog is incapable of living in a home. So things were not looking up for this beautiful German Shepherd.

That is when the Dogs Day Out web series creator and the passionate dog rescuer Rocky Kanaka got an interest in Herschel. Rocky refers to Herschel as Bear, which is most suitable for this guy.
The “Dogs Day Out” is to give locked up dogs an awesome day out where they can just enjoy life.
And Herschel (Or Bear) did indeed enjoy his day out. Playing in snow for the first time is exciting and this was no different for Bear. He did not feel the cold and played games.
According to Rocky, most people do not adopt big dogs.
They need lots of exercise and can be intimidating when things are exciting or when they are nervous. That is when Rocky did something to prove to people that big dogs are loving. He gave away free “Bear” hugs.
This will hopefully give Bear exposure so maybe someone will adopt him after he has been locked up for so long.
And it worked. A lady in Washington adopted him. To spend another magical moment with this amazing dog, they went on a special road trip. Including a detour to the beach.
It does not take long for the beach to mesmerize Bear into crying out with excitement. These two friends had so much fun in the waves. Jumping, biting at the waves, running, and playing.
His new family includes two other German Shepherd siblings and a large space to run without being locked up.
His new mom shared lots of updates on Instagram. He enjoys cuddling with all the family members every chance he gets.
And now he is living the happiest life he could ever dream about. Things are looking up after being locked up.
