Loki, a South Carolina K-9 officer, is recuperating after a vehicle accident that almost took his life.
During a chase, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy Sardarius Henderson crashed into a car that went through traffic lights. Forcing him to lose control of the vehicle. The car flipped over and crashed into a utility pole, which threw Loki from the rear seat.

Rescuers discovered Loki, being unable to move, approximately 20-30 feet away from the wreckage. An animal ambulance took Loki through to a veterinary emergency facility where he had surgery right away. The C1, C2, C3, and C4 vertebras suffered a fracture.
Sheriff Steve Mueller told WYFF News that the K-9 officer had quite a serious injury. Fortunately, veterinary specialists repaired the injury to Loki’s spine.
Since the accident, the sheriff’s department has joined Protecting K9 Heroes. This nonprofit organization compensated for some of the costs of medical expenses.
People from all over the country have donated around $14,000 thus far, including $1,500 from an anonymous contributor. It’s not just money that’s flooding in; words of optimism and encouragement are plentiful on the GoFundMe campaign website.
Many community members prayed for Loki and his handler for quick healing. Despite Loki’s severe injuries in the accident, Henderson went to the hospital and was released a short time later, according to the GoFundMe page.
Loki Recovering
“His handler is recovering with non-life-threatening injuries,” the fundraiser reads. “The bond between this team is unbelievable, and Loki is like a child to him. We are raising funds to offset all medical costs for this department.”
In addition to serving as an important asset to the police force, a K-9 officer promotes company morale. And their families regard them as valuable members. Every day officers spend time with their K-9 officers. And when something goes wrong it is a traumatic experience for officers.
The good news is that Loki is likely to recover.
Although it’s unclear if he can return to work on the police force at this time. Müller said the situation will be revisited within the next month or so.
There are a lot of unknowns following Loki’s injury. But it is evident he is loved and is supported by a strong community of people that are pulling to see him recover completely.
