The 20th of March is World Oral Health Day. A day to help spread awareness of good oral hygiene practices. In dogs, dental hygiene such as setting a routine to brush your dog’s teeth is just as important.
Without it, dental disease causes harm to their overall health. Bacteria, plaque, and tartar build-up on their teeth and get stuck beneath the gum line, where it then gets absorbed into their bloodstream. Reaching the organs, the infection grows and life-threatening disease can then develop.
Preventing the build-up of nasty germs in your dog’s gum line can be done by brushing their teeth. Brushing your dog’s teeth may sound impossible to do but it is easier than you think. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you.
Set a routine
Choose a time of day when your dog is calm and relaxed to brush your dog’s teeth. If taking small steps for you and your dog is better for successful brushing, then do not rush into it.
Daily brushing is ideal however even three days a week will make a huge difference. Your goal should be to keep consistent by sticking to a routine.

Tools To Brush Your Dog’s Teeth
Use a toothbrush designed specifically for dogs. It will have the correct bristle softness and angles. Choose a toothbrush suited to your dog’s size. Finger brushes work well for smaller dogs while larger dogs would require one with longer handles.
It is essential that you use dog toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste as it is poisonous to your dog. Dog toothpaste comes in flavors such as beef, chicken, or peanut butter.
Position yourself
Before you brush your dog’s teeth, discovering the best way to position yourself may take some time and that is okay. You will eventually find what works for your dog.
Don’t stand over them, hold them down nor threaten them. Instead, kneel or sit in front of or next to them and see what your dog’s stress level is. If they seem distressed, rather stop and try again another time.
Soothe the sensation
Getting your dog used to the feeling on their gums can be done by gently rubbing your finger along their upper gums and teeth. If your dog is unwilling, don’t move beyond this step just yet. Persevere with the routine and they will come around.
Toothpaste Treat
Next, put some dog toothpaste on your finger and let your dog lick it. Allowing them to taste it first will prevent them from feeling startled by the surprise. Since it has a flavor it should be a treat for them, a form of praise for letting you rub their gums.
Toothbrush time
Once your dog is happy for you to open and touch the inside of their mouth, begin using the toothbrush with the toothpaste. Lifting their upper lip, angle the bristles at 45 degrees so that they reach the gum line.
How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth
Use a circular motion, brushing the top and bottom and on each side. Eventually, reaching the inside of your dog’s teeth is ideal. If you cannot manage this don’t panic as the dog’s tongue keeps that area cleaner.
Keep your circles small. Being gentle and applying only light pressure is important. You may notice light bleeding from their gums. This is normal, but if it becomes heavy and regular, consult your veterinarian.
Remember to keep at your dog’s pace. Start with a few teeth and work up to brushing more over time. Aim to spend two minutes brushing your dog’s teeth.
Be Encouraging
Reassuring your dog is a great way to lighten the mood. Talk them through the process, telling them what a good dog they are. Stroke their neck now and again.
Reward them after you brush your dog’s teeth
Upon finishing brushing your dog’s teeth, reward them with their favorite treat or toy. Always make sure it ends on a positive note. Soon your dog will be happily displaying its teeth like this adorable poodle in the video below.
