Hero dog retires after saving the lives of more than 80 canines through blood donation.
Arnie, a 9-year-old English Hero Dog, began donating blood to Pet Blood Bank in 2015 but has retired due to the age limit for donors.
Canine lifesavers who donate to Pet Blood Bank must be fit and healthy, weigh above 55 pounds, and be between the ages of one and eight. International travel is also prohibited for dog blood donors.
Arnie, a slightly larger English springer spaniel, began donating blood after his owner Rachel McFarlane, 36, read an appeal for more canine blood donors to aid in the rescue of canines.
Each pint donated has the ability to save the lives of four dogs, meaning Arnie has helped 84 other dogs.
According to McFarlane, Arnie didn’t start giving until he was nearly three years old. She would have signed him up sooner if she had known about the service.
“I don’t think many people are aware of that. It’s probably not something you think about until you’re in the scenario,” she continued.
His pet parent used to take Arnie to a nearby vet to donate blood, who also has a 15-year-old border terrier named Finlay.
“The nurses keep Arnie distracted with gravy bones and treats, and I’ve been able to accompany him in,” McFarlane said, “When he’s getting it done, he’s fine, and he enjoys having everyone worry over him.”
Arnie received a goodie bag for each of his donations. When he retired, he received a basket filled with his favorite snacks and toys.
McFarlane said, “It’s a simple process that’s not at all stressful.”
She added, “All owners of larger breeds should definitely look into donating since they need it from someplace. Arnie has done a fantastic job throughout the years – he’s a sweet lad.”
