Joey Rump faced huge obstacles in her pursuit of a scientific career. Her college denied access to her assistance dog, Theo, into the laboratory. But when the dog wears protective clothing, they have a change of heart.
It was not possible for Rump to do it alone. In 2006, Rump had a horse-riding accident which led to her having physical disabilities and post-traumatic stress. Her assistance dog helps her to balance and pick up any dropped items. Her dog also identifies and warns Joey of situations that could cause her stress.
The college and Rump came to an agreement as long as the dog wears protective clothing.
Thanks to Theos help, Rump had achieved acceptance to an undergraduate degree in neuroscience at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
It took Rump over a year of convincing the university to allow her assistance dog entry into the laboratory. She did not give up but fought for her case. Theo and his predecessor, Sampson, were finally allowed access.
These two very special assistance dogs in protective clothing show the world just how incredible their capabilities are.
Now, Rump still fights for others in the same situation. She is the chief executive of Empower Ability Consulting.
She has helped universities and workplaces to change their perspectives on allowing assistance dogs into laboratories. This has improved the lives of over a hundred people so far. One of those people was Jade Simon.
Her assistance dog, Basil, now also helps in the laboratory. Allowing Jade to undertake her Ph.D.
This is all because Theo and Sampson have proven how remarkable dogs are.
Dogs are not only man’s best friend but also their most competent working partner. Dogs and humans working together are transforming this world into something beautiful.
