Iowa firefighter saves a Mastiff from a burning building. He then decides to adopt him (named George) because the dog was on the verge of being put down.
An Iowa firefighter has a new best friend: a dog he rescued from a burning building and from euthanasia.
Last month, firefighters from Des Moines responded to an apartment fire.
The crew discovered a huge, 16-month-old male mastiff while extinguishing the fire. They started giving him oxygen right away because he was still alive.
According to a Facebook post by the City of Des Moines, The animal control department arrived and offered the little canine two options: a potentially costly rehabilitation or euthanasia.
It’s a sad decision that no pet parent wants to make. Still, with increasing medical expenditures on the horizon, the owner had no choice but to put the dog to sleep.
Malcolm Cortner, one of the firefighters who helped pull the injured dog from the building decided to aid.
He requested to adopt the dog and cover the puppy’s medical care costs. After the fire, the Mastiff, who has since been called George, received the medical attention he required.
The dog appears to be doing a lot better than he was following the fire in the before and after images posted to Facebook.
The city states, “Congratulations to Firefighter Cortner, who has a new best buddy, George.”
We couldn’t agree more! We’re sure Cortner will always have a devoted and loyal companion with George. It turns out, Mastiffs have been allies and defenders of humanity for thousands of years.
After such a traumatic start to their relationship, it appears that this devoted duo was made for each other.
We’re grateful to all animal rescues, particularly Cortner, the firefighter who saves Mastiff twice. In our opinion, he is a great hero!
Thanks to Daily Paws for this amazing story and to City of Des Moines for the feature photos.
