Golden Retrievers are known for being sociable and jolly. But they’re definitely more than fun-loving pooches. With their superb tracking skills and excellent sense of smell, they always make ideal rescue dogs.
Alyeska Resort, a holiday spot in Girdwood, Alaska, has decided to make a Golden Retriever named Stormy a member of its security and rescue team. The said four-month-old puppy is currently training to become an avalanche rescue dog that will eventually help the resort keep its 1.6K-acre skiing area safe.
Why Stormy’s role is important
Ben Napolitano, Alyeska Resort’s communications manager, explains the importance of having avalanched rescue dogs. He says that these trained pooches can search for human scent emanating from under the snow and clear an area in a matter of 15 to 20 minutes. In contrast, human rescuers’ operations may take multiple hours.
Last year, Alyeska Resort started looking for a new pup for its rescue team. Stormy is considered a perfect match since she is a purebred Golden Retriever who comes from a long line of Goldens who have taken on working dog roles.
The pup in training
Stormy was originally based in the sunny state of California. Nevertheless, she didn’t have any trouble adjusting to the cold weather of Alaska.
Cody Burns, Stormy’s trainer, has a lot of good things to say about the pup. He describes Stormy as one strong, friendly, and brave dog. He explains that the dog likes trying new things and meeting new people. On top of that, she has lots of energy, and she loves working regardless of the weather.
Stormy’s training will focus on basic obedience and related skills since she is still young and inexperienced. That way, she will have a strong foundation that will support her learning curve as she accepts more complicated tasks.
Cody says that he and Stormy practice search exercises every morning. Then, they both load the chairlifts and visit each patrol station within the park.
