An animal rescue organization has the hard task of finding homes for elder dogs. They are definitely not as popular. But there is one Senior Dog Rescue that gives these dogs some enjoyment in their last days.
When Hippo, a stray dog, was taken in by the Adams County Animal Shelter in October 2017, they knew he did not have much time. He had cancerous tumors covering his face and his health was quickly declining. The veterinarians knew the elderly dog was in pain and would not live much longer.
The founder of Cayleb’s Kindred Senior Dog Rescue, Sophiane Nacer, who started the rescue when she was 14, is passionate about helping senior dogs have enjoyable last days.
Hippo had to stay at the shelter for five days. But then Sophiane immediately came to give him one last great day.
Driving Hippo, with the windows down of course, to Starbucks, Hippo got two Puppuccinos. After that, they went to Washington Park in Denver, and Hippo munched down treats, socialized with other dogs, and drank lake water. At the end of the day, a veterinarian came to end Hippo’s suffering. Watch the video below to see his story:
All she wants to do is to make them happy and do everything she thinks an old dog would really want to do. And to give them a really good time.
The inspiration for Sophiane to start Cayleb’s Kindred Senior Dog Rescue started in 2012 when she adopted an older dog named Cayleb from the Adams County Animal Shelter. He died two months later.
Since then, her animal rescue organization has rescued more than 80 dogs facing their last days.
Her animal rescue organization helps dogs mainly have medical issues – cancer, dementia, and heart problems. Sophiane says that it is good to foster or adopt these animals as the donations cover the cost of the dog’s medical bills and food. So they only need to give love.
Christine Carscadden is one of the rescue’s regular foster parents and she recently took in Ursa and Sadie.
Ursa had tumors across her whole body but was amazing with Christine’s child. She was with the family for almost six months.
The abandonment at a doggy daycare brought Sadie to the rescue. Christine wants to make Sadie’s last days very comfortable and enjoyable. Fostering older dogs is very fulfilling for Christine. And that no one gets disappointed knowing they help a vulnerable pet.
Potential foster and adoptive families go through screening to ensure they can properly care for any dog that needs a home. Sophiane said the demand for hospice care is so great, that there are currently few long-term, senior dog-specific rescues.
The next step for Sophiane and her mother, Rebecca Shattuca, is to create a “seniors for seniors” program at the animal rescue organization.
Allowing older people to adopt senior dogs. This would be a win-win scenario for both. As the dogs will thrive living with older people and the people would also benefit.
