In Berkeley, California, a three-legged puppy named Pi and her four siblings were surrendered to the shelter named Hopalong Animal Rescue. Pi was the only one in her litter that was born with one missing leg. It was a good thing that she didn’t have any other health problems.
Thom McCallum, a regular foster father, volunteered to care for her before she was adopted. So he and his rescue dog, Ruby, went to the shelter to meet Pi and take her home with them.
He was aware that Ruby possessed a strong maternal instinct. He needed Ruby’s help since Pi required a mother dog’s caring and compassionate personality at this time.
When Pi arrived home with Ruby and Thom, everything was new to her. Everything that she’s gone through so far had left her fatigued, so she spent the majority of her first day resting.
Ruby worked hard to make Pi feel at home. She wanted to support her as a friend. However, Pi was timid and would retreat if Ruby approached.
Over the next few days, Pi began to warm up to Ruby. She wanted to participate in all of Ruby’s activities. With Thom’s support, Pi was able to go up the stairs and go after Ruby. Thom was so proud of her modest achievements.
Soon, Pi and Ruby were inseparable. They were so devoted to one another that Thom felt sad thinking about the time that the two animals would be separated when Pi found a permanent home. Then he considered having someone in the neighborhood adopt her so they could continue to see her.
Thom designed and distributed posters across his neighborhood. A week after, he then received a call that pleasantly surprised him.
A young couple who had recently moved into the neighborhood a few blocks from Thom was very interested in meeting Pi. They already owned a three-legged dog, and they believed that adopting another one would be a wonderful idea.
The couple fell in love with Pi at first sight, as did their dog, Rui. Ruby even seemed to agree that Rui would make an excellent mentor for Pi.
The adoption was finalized one week after meeting the sweet three-legged puppy. Thom found it difficult to let her go, but he felt they were the ideal family for her.
